with Estelle Lovatt (Hampstead School of Art, BBC Radio 2 Art Critic, Art of England Magazine)
The first of a series of occasional workshops exploring the interface between art and psychoanalysis. The focus will be on the way in which the unconscious, memory and fantasy shape one’s inter and outer world and express themselves in the artist’s life and work. The workshops will provide an opportunity both to consider the mind of the artist by reading the messages encoded in the art and to read the messages in the art by understanding something of the mind of the artist.
The morning will be divided into three parts. First, Estelle Lovatt will deliver an illustrated slide lecture on the life, work and death of Mark Rothko, one of the world’s most famous artists; this will be followed by a question and answer session. After tea and coffee there will be a group discussion on psychoanalytic associations to Rothko’s work and on art as an expression of the internal world. This part of the morning will be facilitated by Tina Simmonds, Course Director of the MHCPC.
Cost: £35 per person to include tea, coffee and biscuits.
